"Dunedin is a relatively inexpensive place to live and the beaches, city and nearby mountains are extremely beautiful. Oh,.... did I mention the very friendly people?", Haidar Buduhaim, Saudi Arabia

Accommodation

One of the first things you think about when you move to a new city or country is "where am I going to live?" In Dunedin you will have a wide range of options to choose from. Dunedin's 'student campus' environment offers safe, comfortable and affordable accommodation for all tertiary students. For secondary and language schools there are a wide variety of home stays provided by friendly New Zealand families.

Dunedin has a whole neighbourhood of students. In the area around the university there are new houses, historic houses, apartments, hostels and halls of residence. A student doesn't have to look far for accommodation.

Homestays

Home stays are an excellent option for students who wish to live at home with a Dunedin family. These are normally found in the suburban areas of Dunedin outside of the student campus. Most international students who study in a secondary school live in a home stay environment or school hostel. Students are provided with their own bedroom and study facilities within a family home. All home stay families undergo police checks and are visited by representatives of the institution the student is staying at (both before the student arrives and during their stay).

Flatting

Flatting is the most common form of accommodation for tertiary students beyond their first year of study. A 'flat' is a term given to a private house which is rented or leased by a group of students. There are many flats situated within walking distance of the campuses and most are an easy walk to the city centre. Most institutions have a weekly listing of available houses, flats and apartments and these are listed in the daily newspaper.

Supervised Flatting

Supervised flatting is another option which gives you all the benefits of flatting but in a controlled manner. These flats come fully furnished, are self-catered and are managed by live-in wardens. Many of these flats are set in secure complexes and are close to the tertiary campuses and the city centre.

Halls of Residence

An option for students entering tertiary education are the halls of residence. For students entering tertiary education, Dunedin's halls of residence offer supervised living in a student community with a head of hall, friendly staff and senior students. In all, Dunedin has 15 halls of residence which are within walking distance of the tertiary campus area. Most halls have single rooms with study facilities and some provide female-only and male-only areas.
